TN;1990 Bava Barolo Contrabbasso di Castiglione Falleto Scarrone

picked up 3 bottles of this in a recent auction, they were listed as 1990 Bava Barolo but the image showed a double bass on the label so I took a chance that it was the better wine…
And it was

Great balance with typical tar and roses, fully resolved palate with lively acidity , with air a slight savoury unami quality appears. cherry with a slight medicinal aspect, long finish
very nice wine and very good value

I’ve never heard of the producer. Do you know anything about them? From the label, it looks like they’re based far outside the Barolo DOCG, up closer to Turin, so I assume this was made with purchased fruit.

nope, never heard of them either, googled and CTed them, worked out this was their flagship wine, figured 1990 was worth the bet and it was. wasnt earth shaking but a very nice wine, could maybe go a bit longer. For the price I paid Im loving this wine

just checked their website,
They own the land this wine came from

Traditional vs. Modern Barolo / Barbaresco - WINE TALK - WineBerserkers [whistle.gif]

Hi Pat,
Umm, you have them listed in “modern”, not complaining thats probably a fair call, do you know anything else about them?

Just that they have used barriques since 1975 and practice organic farming. Hope that helps.

If you click here:

and scroll down to the first set of photos, you can see their farmhouse and the upper part of their portion of Scarrone, which goes down to the bottom of the hill.

If that wine came only from Scarrone, it would say so on the label.

Thanks Ken,
just checked the label, no mention on the front label, and the back label is a whole lot of waffle about music, so Im guessing this is a blend of vineyards?

I’d agree with (IIRC) Hugh Johnson, who described them as very good at marketing (with the implication that the wine was of secondary importance). That said, the TN is an appealing one, and the wine certainly looks nicely mature, so if the price were right, then I’m sure I would have been a buyer.

Yes, I would assume so. Not sure what other vineyards they own, or if this is from purchased grapes.
