1989 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Bella Oaks - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (7/8/2009)
First off, not your typical “perfect” Heitz cork…it was dry, and came out in pieces. But still, only stained on the bottom. Dark browning plum color…nose of dark caramel, little Tawney, plum/cherry, dusty old cedar spice. Smooth with an acidic dry kick in the mouth. Aged fruit, dusty dry cedary spices, leather, dark brewed tea. Really has a sharp orange acidic kick to it, keeping it alive, but a little harsh. Nice subtle old wine flavors…but really lacks in fruit, and doesn’t give me too much “Heitz terroir” in the mint/euc area, making it a little ho-hum. For an '89, not bad…but usually Heitz is killer in off Vintages…this is just so so. Too bad…but maybe the maggie I have left will be better? (87 pts.)
