TN: 1989 Château Magdelaine (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru)

I don’t drink a lot of Bdx, so take this note with a grain of salt. I enjoyed this, but it’s certainly not going to steer me away from Burgundy…

Pristine bottle from Premier Cru–fill into the neck, spinning capsule, etc. In the glass, this is an opaque red, reminiscent of dried blood with a slight brown hue. Very ripe on the nose and the palate, with cherries, cassis, and a bit of chocolate. At first, the wine is tentative and one-dimensional. But as it opens up, the fruit becomes more aggressive, but the wine also becomes a bit pruney. Some depth emerges, the nose opens up, and the wine comes into balance–but this is not a complex, intellectual wine. Ripe tannins linger and and this wine is probably on the upswing. I would give this at least an hour or two in the decanter, as the last sip was the best, and the wine threw a significant amount of sediment. All in all, too ripe for my tastes, and a bit straightforward, but for $50 it’s hard to argue with an imperfect but tasty 20-year-old Bordeaux. (90 pts.)
