TN: 1988 Mouton Rothschild

Purchased last year from Chambers Street. There’s a Christie’s sticker on the side, so this wine has been traded around a little bit. But it looks to be in good shape with a fill into the base of the neck.

Cork soaked through. Pours a healthy dark garnet, just the tiniest touch of bricking at the rim.

The nose is surprisingly tight upon opening; I get green notes, a bit of char, that’s about it. Clearly needs a little time.

Opens up into a Bordeaux of the sort that just isn’t (can’t be?) produced anymore. On the nose; loads of green tobacco, blackberries, black cherries, dried flowers, dark potting soil, a distinct note of Japanese sumi ink, and a bit of manure-y notes in the background.

In the mouth, it is medium bodied, medium in acidity, tannins are mostly gone. The flavors are dark, driven by earth and tobacco. Any cherry/blackberry fruit is an afterthought. There is a moderate amount of complexity, and the finish is respectable, but this wine is just missing that extra oomph to make it great. Nonetheless, a pleasant drinking experience and always special to drink a First Growth.

Nice note Noah. This was our wedding year and I put a few of these away on release. My impressions have been very similar to yours. Sounds like you got a good bottle.

Every time I open one I get a chuckle over Suckling rating it 100 points.

Fantastic, descriptive tasting note. That is my style of wine for sure. I have really enjoyed the 1988s over the last handful of years, given the profile that you laid out. Now that said, it is hard to justify the price point for this wine and vintage. The Lalande is a wonderful alternative. By the way, on the way cheaper end of the spectrum, Meyney turned out a really strong 1988, but I have to admit it’s been seven or eight years since I had one last. They are probably on their last legs.

PS. Love that 1988 Keith Haring label.

I’ve been loving the ‘88 Lynch Bages. Bought a bunch on release (~$20?) and have reloaded a few times in recent years at $80-120. Still going strong with a classic profile only enhanced by the vintage character.
