TN: 1988 Léoville Las Cases

Just classic, well made Bordeaux at its peak. Beautiful nose of cedar, graphite, and red fruits. On the palate this is really, really nice, with pencil shavings, more cedar, and dark cherries. Tannins are fully integrated and it’s in a sweet spot where the fruit and secondary characteristics are dancing together seamlessly. I’m sure this can hold for a long time, but for my tastes, I’d suggest drinking now.

Thanks bud!

Evocative note.

I don’t drink a lot of Bordeaux, but I have a soft spot for LLC. It’s my platonic ideal of what claret should be, on the sturdy side of the equation. Ch. Margaux on the other, softer, side.

Good value too, relatively.

Agreed across the board!

Glad to see '88 still alive and kicking. I have a '88 Cos waiting for the right moment. Hope it shows as well as your LLC did!

I have a few of these stashed away - will have to open one sooner rather than later….

Nice Larry! For my tastes, it’s in a perfect spot right now. If hou have a few, i highly recommend taking one for a spin soon.

Cheers!

Sounds like a classic wine! I am fond of this vintage. Had a Lalande and a Magdelaine 88 over the last few months.

Im pretty sure you’d dig it my man!

And i REALLY need to explore older Magdelaine. Sounds like I’ve been missing out big time

A nuanced and delicate - lovely - LLC.

1988 is a fine vintage, I agree somewhat classic. Within the past year, I’ve had a truly excellent 88 Palmer, along with very nice examples from Latour, Petrus, PLL, and a few others. A corked BAMA but the underlying material was still good!

100%. I don’t like LLC or Cos, as usual, but there are great wines on both sides of the river, now hitting their stride. The last couple years, I’ve had Rausan-Segla, Magdelaine, Certan de May, Gruaud. Others the last few years are HB, LMHB, Trot, Lagrange, Barton, VCC, DDC.
