To celebrate a life well lived, we decided to open the very last of the 1987 Calera Jensen vineyard we have had in the cellar since release. I have always considered this to be one of the - if not the very - best examples of pinot noir made in the USA. I have not had better. As we had not opened one in quite awhile I was unsure what to expect. The cork was perfect and color very good, so I was enthusiastic about the wine at least being in good condition.
I need not have worried. This was perhaps the wine’s very best showing. Expansive, still holding great fruit, the wine was generous but still structured and correct in every way. Nuanced with elements fig, forest floor and dried apricot. some tobacco notes and potpourri. Tannins are resolved and perfectly integrated. No flab or mid palate thinness. Just lovely. I would say it is at its peak. I’ll miss knowing that the bottle is down in the cellar but happy we got to enjoy it at this level of quality. Delicious. ![]()
