TN:1986 Château Potensac

1986 Château Potensac

1986 was a ‘hard’ vintage in the tannic sense with many wines that took far longer than normal to shed the often fierce tannins, but for most it all worked out pretty well in the end as long as you were patient. I came across a bottle of this in the cellar and decided to pop it. Still reasonably dark, mid neck fill, no significant bricking at the edges, and the early hard tannins have softened nicely. Good red fruit, and lengthy finish, with no appreciable edges on the way. Don’t write these venerable wines off without tasting!

I’m glad it was fine, and I would have guessed it as fine. Medocs IMO are the longest-lived of any category of red wine. This sucker ain’t even 40 yet!
I just bought a mixed case of minor '89s at auction, will be picking them up in a couple of weeks.
Gloria, Rausan-Segla, Cantemerle, Sociando-Mallet.
I will be shocked, shocked, if any of them are over the hill.

89 Cantemerle was fantastic two years ago with many years ahead of it!
