My first Haut Brion, from a stock of 80’s Bordeaux purchased all around '92 and ignored (mostly). I had a choice to open this or the 1964 Lafite, I felt the choice was pretty easy to make.
Solid cork, low neck fill. The wine was only the slightest bit advanced in color, mostly quite even and velvety. Poured a taste right away and thought it was a bit disjointed, but decanted off the (minimal) sediment and within the hour was all there, though the last glass was the best (no surprise)! The nose was classic Bordeaux: Cedar, mint, red currants, and tobacco leaves dominated, with hints of cocao dust and smoke as it breathed.
Palate was smooth and seamless, especially after a couple hours though it developed a bit of grip by the end. Rich and viscous in texture, the finish was long and satisfying. This was both cookie cutter mature Bordeaux, AND very much its own. I could get used to this!
