My brother was feeling generous last night and opened a 1984 Chateau Mouton-Rothschild. The label was highly damaged, but thankfully the wine was not. In fact the wine was incredible, so complex, and drinking at peak right now. Every sip I closed my eyes and felt like I was walking through a Chinatown market, man sitting on the porch smoking a cigarette as Asian spices lift through the air from nearby restaurants. The wind changed direction and hints of leather from a nearby shop was added to the senses. There was still pleasant acidity, providing structure to the palate of cherry and tobacco. This is definitely my WOTY so far!!

Good showing for an ‘84.

Not the best vintage, but this was 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Probably why it’s held up so well.
Can’t recall ever hearing of a good showing from an 84 other than Jayer so congrats!

I’ve had a very good '84 Lafite. Glad to hear Mouton can be similar even in rough vintages.

The 1984 vintage was one of powerful structure, but light on fruit relatively speaking. Mouton has long been very promising- if for more as a companion to a dessert or cheese course in the long run- but it sounds like it may have come out even better than I hoped. Either way, longevity was never an issue for 1984 so much as the concern the structure would outlive the fruit.
Appreciate the TN- I will make sure to open one soon.
