TN: 1984 Carneros Creek Merlot, Napa Valley

1984 Carneros Creek Merlot, Napa Valley. What can I say. Another stunner from Carneros Creek! The bottle and cork were an excellent shape, as someone clearly took great care of this wine over the years (thank you). It poured a dark, crimson red with slight bricking on the edges with a nice nose of plums and autumn leaves. But where this really shines is on the palate with the Red fruits and sweet tobacco playing together seamlessly, and all washed down with plenty of acidity and a medium bodied finish. Not quite as structured as their cabs (no kidding, it’s a merlot), but absolutely delicious and like almost all Carneros Creek wines, it has aged incredibly well.

Thanks pal! And i completely agree - I’ve gotten super lucky with most of the older Carneros Creeks that I’ve purchased. Honestly, i think ive only had a few duds…although now I’ve definitely jinxed myself

Thanks Mark! I wish i could have tried these when they were younger as i absolutely love how they have aged! Cheers!

Rich,
Carneros Creek held one of the best tastings I’ve ever attended. Francis Mahoney was still in charge and he took a Pinot Noir that had just finished primary and put it into seven different cooperage; some new, some not. He left these lots alone for 6 months except for topping and inoculating for ML, and then when we visited, brought them out to taste.
It was hard to believe that it was the exact same wine in all seven glasses and it was the first time I’d ever realized how much a barrel regimen can change the aromatic and flavor profile of a wine.
A lesson and event I’ve never forgotten.

Apologies for the drift but I couldn’t help myself.
Best, Jim

Jim, that is awesome - What a great experience! I’d love to take part in a tasting like that! I’ve actually yet to try one of their pinots but have a 1983 on deck. The color looks excellent through the bottle so fingers crossed (now I’ve DEFINITELY jinxed myself, ha!).

And p.s. you’re welcome to 'thread drift ’ anytime with stories like that
