TN: 1983 Chateau Beychevelle, Saint-Julian

Unexpectedly received this wine as a gift from a very generous Berserker that I have never met in person but have come to call friend. Amazing the depth of relationships one can form on such a convivial website.

As you can see from the pictures, this bottle is pristine. The long cork dislodged firmly but easily, completely intact. The funk blew off rather quickly, and even on pop and pour this wine was lovely. An elegant perfume of mostly red fruits, forest floor and dried wild mushrooms. Medium weight on the palate, crispy and tart red fruits, some sweetness, shortish, crimped finish. Not a great wine by any stretch, but a very lovely, elegant, honest wine that I am thrilled to have tried at this waning juncture of its life. A relic of how Bordeaux was once made. Starting to fade after 1.5 hours…

Ha, that yucky 2005 Columbia Crest note I posted gets more traffic than this beauty. This wine had me surfing the web this morning looking for some more mature Bordeaux. I keep saying I need to backfill and yet keep on buying more new new. Tough as it was, I drew the line on the 2011 Dunn HM, which was priced ridiculously.

Robert,

Beautiful post! Story, pix, and TN are all a joy.

Hey we are friends here who never met and you have not sent me pristine claret! WTF???

You didn’t find any cheap 1978 Figeac because I bought it last night!

Bring that and the '81 Conesillante to our Georgia cycling trip next Spring!

Another 80’s Beychevelle love story! It’s been a while since I’ve had the 83 of this, but I have one in the cellar, so it may be time.

I bought a small stash of 85 Beychevelle this summer, but haven’t shipped them yet. Can’t wait to try that one, never had an 85 Beychevelle.

Nothing like aged claret. Nothing, really. Thanks for posting the note.

Gotta love Beychevelle. Great note

Was admiring the label this morning. It’s really quite beautiful and showcases the nautical history of the Chateau dating back many centuries.

Always enjoyed Beychevelle, and the 1983 clarets are just so drinkable. Not stellar but really enjoyable with a good steak.

BTW, the 1982 is stellar, and still slightly underpriced in comparison to other 1982s.

That label is fantastic. Your note? Meh.

Thanks for posting – I always enjoy reading what you have to say.
