TN: 1982 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Sarmassa (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo)

Purchased a year or two ago from Chambers Street. Cork was in good shape but saturated about 2/3rds the way through. Opened at Crabtree’s Kittle House and then sat on the table for about two hours open while we finished up 6 other barolos. All wines were served blind and for no particular reason, this one happened to be last. I brought it so I knew what it was. The aroma of the cork alone presaged an excellent wine, with truffles and cedar on the cork. The wine was not fruit driven, but was more a combination of truffles, wild mushrooms, earthy forest floor aromas, minerals and a bit of Piedmonte creosote. There was some red fruit which got brighter as it sat in the glass. The most interesting thing is that there were still some unresolved tanins and I question whether this wine has even reached its peak. It certainly is not on the down slope.

Color was excellent. No sign of bricking. Most people thought it was mid to late 90s. The other wines were all 1996 to 2007 and the really nice earthy truffle and mushroom components of this wine were more pronounced than in the other wines. (91 pts.)

Sorry I missed it Jay. I had a '71 Rinaldi on deck, but had to bail due to work

Too bad. It would have been nice to have another oldie.

Really nice note. I need to buy some older Barolo when I start buying again. I’m too young to have bought it at release so that leaves me with the secondary market. Chamber’s seems like a very good option.
