TN: 1982 Château Lynch-Bages (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac)

Was headed to the Toronto Maple Leafs game on Tuesday night and needed something to drink before the game. Was pretty excited to see my father drop this on the table to sip and enjoy for and hour and a half before puck drop. A comeback 5-4 win in overtime was a great finishing touch of the evening. The wine wasn’t too shabby either, as you can see.

From a pristine source that had cellared it since release, this is just gorgeous, classic warm vintage Bordeaux at its finest. Medium ruby with light bricking. Aromas are of violets, gravel, celery seed, cassis, plum, black cherry, and tobacco leaf. The palate is super silky entering on cassis and plum. Acid is medium and tannin is medium minus. Loads of violets, plum and gravel round out the finish. All in all this is incredibly fresh, balancing the abundant, yet optimally ripe fruit against lovely secondary notes. Not much in the way of tertiary notes on this bottle. Everything about this experience belies the true age of this wine. If tasted blind I expect I'd guess 96, 99, 01 or 04 as this is just in wonderful condition with a long life ahead of it. (94 points)

We recently drank this at an ‘82 Bordeaux dinner that included a dozen wines and all the 1st growths except Lafite. It was brought as a backup wine and despite being served with just a quick decant, it was great. I ranked it #3, just behind Cheval and La Miss. I think the ‘90 is drinking even better now.

1989 and 1990 is a dynamic LB duo…as is 1985 and 1986.

Love this wine, but it has been years. A friend and I had a long running debate about whether the 1985 or the 1982 was the “better” wine…but we never had them side by side.

Had the 75 LB a few years ago and it was impressive.
