I was poaching a Fjord trout fillet for dinner and I felt like an off dry white. I had been meaning to open this bottle for a while but was hesitant. What would a thirty six year old sweet Loire Chenin Blanc from a generally accepted weak vintage taste like?
The cork comes out cleanly. The colour is a clear deep golden yellow plum. The nose is a heady mix of fresh peach, bruised apple, wet wool and green almonds straight from the tree. The mouthfeel is a seamless solid sweetness, not hugely complex but satisfying. The length is moderate and finishes dry. My low expectations for this wine were significantly exceeded by its performance. I almost owe this wine an apology.
