My Bday rolled around again so naturally i had to open some birth-year wines, and i started with a 1980 Stony Hill Gewurztraminer. The color looked awesome through the glass and obviously the producer is highly regarded for the longevity in their wines, so i was cautiously optimistic. Welp…I’m happy to report that my expectations were absolutely blown away as soon as i poured the first glass.
Beautiful light straw in color with candied pineapple and spring florals literally leaping from the glass (you could smell it from 6 feet away).
On the palate this was staggering. A perfect harmony of Waxy stone fruits, mango, and citrus tinged acidity which creates a wonderful mouth-feel on the long finish. Incredibly fresh, complex, and delicious. Blind you would NEVER guess it was anywhere even close to 44 years old. An absolutely stunning and unforgettable wine (even my Mom, a very casual wine drinker, was blown away). Easily my White Wine Of The Year, and probably ever. Could not be happier to have 3 more in the cellar - fingers crossed they show half as well as this one did! Life is good!
Live look at Rich Brown blowing birthday kisses at us from his private cellar/private plane whatever & drinking made up wines like “Stony Hill Gerwurz Traminer” from 1980. Must be nice, my friend. Must be effing nice
