TN: 1979 Kenwood Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series (USA, California, Sonoma County)

12.9% alcohol, $30. Cork was in decent shape. Decanted only for sediment (and there was plenty), then drank over 3 hours.
Was a little nervous at first because the nose consisted of stewed tomatoes and mustard seed, which worried me that I was too late.
I was immensely surprised at the quality of the wine, though. Again, I did have to fight through the boquet, but once I got past that it was actually very tasty. The concentration of the wine was definitely right up front; nice weight creamy vanilla. I was also surprised that there were still significant tannins present. The finish had a pleasant dry, spicy dustiness with some peppercorn; very slightly candied, however (but that was insignificant compared to everything else I described).
Gladly there was no drop off in the wine over the course of the night.
I’ll be honest, I am really confused if I drank this just on time or a couple of years too late. Either way I can’t complain, it was indeed enjoyable. (90 pts.)
