TN: 1978 Bouchard Corton

from a nice looking bottle with a tattered label, bought recently from an online source, the wine was horrible and undrinkable. Smelled ok with little nose, but on the palate had a horrible sour twisted midpalate that amplified into the finish. Tried it a couple more times over the next couple hours, but down the drain it went . . . unfortunately I bought 2 bottles from this source, so I have one to go. It wasn’t heat-damaged, I think, but it was nasty . . .

Ah, this was coming on to a tough time for Bouchard. I remember several really insipid 78 Bouchard wines that I tasted in MA at a not to be named retail outlet. They were quite overprocessed. I had another set of Bouchard wines from the 1985 vintage that were really stripped from filtration. The 85 Echezeaux I mistook for a Rose even while drinking it! All the 85s’ I estimated would age prematurely and the price at the time was absurd for the quality in the bottle.

Fortunately Bouchard is once again making some very fine wine since being purchased by Henriot.

I had a 1964 from the Domaine that was absolutely phenomenal.
Sounds like a major winemaking problem in 1978?
Bouchard now is probably the top negociant in the business.
I love Jadot and Drouhin too. Faiveley I have yet to taste since the change.

The '07 Faiveley Clos des Cortons was one of my favorites at la Paulée…

Too bad Alan, but there is always hope for the 3rd bottle, unless you succeed in selling it, grin.
I recall Bouchard '71 Corton and '72 Clos de Beze that were quite nice, but I never had any '78’s.

I had a '78 La Romanee at Bern’s once which I was incredibly excited to try, but it seemed to be a victim of character-stripping filtration and was a pretty big letdown.
