1968 Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley. I popped this one thanks to @Jeff_Leve awesome note the other day, and as expected, he was spot on. This was a well aged cab that is slowly fading into the sunset with tobacco, leather, and a hint of tart cherry on the finish. Medium bodied and clearly on the downslope. A nice enough wine but just that. Still, always a pleasure to open an aged Cali!
I drank this by the case in the mid 70s. The California Cabs from 1959 through 1970 were incredibly great wines, with 1959 - 62, then '64, then '68 very best of them.
Not many bottles left, and most of those fading, but the 1960 Gemello last fall was somewhere north of perfect.
I have some pristine bottles of the 1977 Charles Krug Vintage Selection. I guess the 70s are not considered their golden era but the two bottles of it I’ve had have been very good and still kicking, although certainly on the aged side
Funny I thought to myself, before clicking the thread,
“Let’s see how that showed for Rich this weekend”
lol Well Done
Sounds lovely even if in its twilight years.
We had a 1965 Krug in Santa Barbara a couple of weeks ago, and it was in terrific shape. Maybe a bit light, but great flavors. Maybe a bit better than your description of the 1968 here.
I have great faith in California cabs from that era, only occasionally disappointed.
