1929 Château Climens - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac (10/5/2009)
Opened for my Mom’s 80th birthday. Deep mahagony color. Top shoulder level fill. Still lots of sweet fruit, balanced by ample acidity. Long finish, and nice mouthfeel. If the total experience affects the appreciation of the wine, and it does, then the look on my Mom’s face when I pulled out the bottle made this a 100 point wine/experience.
This was actually the first Sauternes I ever drank (back in 1976 or so), and the person who brought it said it needed more time. My Sauternes have been downhill ever since.
A very happy birthday to your mother who should be very proud of her son.
Jeff, BRAVO on selecting this wine for your mother’s 80th birthday!!!

Mazel Tov, classy birthday wine. Happy Birthday to your mom!
I tasted the 29 about two years ago. Adam Ballin was scriber of the following TN.
“As soon as the 1929 Chateau Climens…a legendary wine, one considered by some to be the finest barsac/sauterne produced last century, Im certainly not arguing on that one…for me this is the greatest wines I have tasted. An Amazing nose or creme brulee, marmalade, fruits, touch of spice…wow…it is so intense and powerful…on the palate this voluptuous wine fills your entire mouth with its viscous rich body. Long long long finish…quite simply an incredible wine. For me this is like a bigger better version of the 1967 Yquem…100/100”
Thanks all for the kind words. Sorry, no photos. I was too busy with other things to think about taking a picture.
Kevin, that is a great description of the wine, and it was a great wine.
i have a Chateau Climens 2003 in our database. http://www.vivino.com/chateau-climens/
i think this alone 1923 Sémillion variety will certainly make you a millionaire!
We also had a bunch of 1959s including Lafite and 1900 Margaux, all of them showed extremely well but Climen truly was memorable.
