TN: 09' Drouhin Morgon

09’ Drouhin Morgon- Opened this last night after we got home from the in laws. My wife wanted a lighter red, which means something Pinot, she loves Bojo’s so I thought this would do the trick. After I poured the glass and smelled the wine I thought it was fine but after the first sip my wife looked at me and said that the wine wasn’t very good, I thought it was just her, but the wine was in a really weird spot, not reduced or flawed just shut down hard.
Left it on the counter over night and am finishing up the bottle tonight.

First Glass is still showing the same as last night, a bit more open but still closed tight. The nose isn’t fresh, it’s got a strange mix of hardness, no fruit, no perfume, nothing that would tell me this was Bojo if it was blind. The palate has hard acid, lots of minerals and Iron, Iron and more Iron with very little fruit and nothing else.

About 6 hours later, WOW. This wine has completely changed, really pretty aromas of lifted Cherry fruit, great perfume, smells like a village level Vosne from a good vintage intermixed with sandalwood and spice. The palate has Iron, but it has certainly taken a back seat, with forward Cherry fruit, minerals, spice and a hint of game.

I have 10 bottles left of my case and will leave these for a couple of more years. This is exactly why I bought long in 09’, I love Burgundy but can’t buy the expensive stuff in quantity and thought these were a great replacement, a typical yes and if you are a Bojo purist you probably hate this vintage but if you bemoan current Burg pricing this will do the trick, I paid $9 a bottle.

Jason, had this last week and completely agree, it’s in a bit of a tough spot and needed air to open…unfortunately, we drained our bottle well before the 6 hour mark. I’m not touching another 2009 for some time.

Opened another last night, very disappointing, nothing on the nose, hard as nails, shut down and not all that enjoyable.

Tonight… Wow, what a difference a day makes. Dark cherry with a touch of chalk, really vibrant and awake. The palate is moderately high acid with dark cherry, stone, orange rind and slate, medium weight with a moderately long finish that’s shored up by the persistent acid spine. Delicious on night 2 which makes me think that I won’t touch another one for at least 2 more years.

I wasn’t even aware of Drouhin cru bojos until about six months ago. I’ve never seen them in the flesh at retail so I bought one of each of the 2014’s to experiment. Based on this TN I’m not sure when I will actually sacrifice one!
