07 Dragani Riserva [Montepulciano d’Abruzzo] I hardly ever have this region, but we were making homemade pizzas, so it seemed like a good time for this. I know nothing about this region, btw. 13.5% abv. It’s medium to full bodied, dark hued, still actually kind of red/purple. Not much nose. Finish is clipped but it pairs well enough with a red sauce style deep dish pan pizza. We put half the bottle in a split, and come back to it a couple of days later, when we need an afternoon quench, while dipping our toes in the freezing pool. Unfortunately, it’s cracked up during that time, despite being sealed after overflowing, to ensure no oxygen would be the small bottle. Solid commercial wine, solid bottle, straightforward flavors, but likely to have been better much younger. There is a bit of sediment in both bottles, surprisingly. No tannin, nor unbalanced acidity. I’d give it a B- or C+, but 9 years is probably being unfair to what the producers were intending here. They have a nice website btw, but there doesn’t seem to be any discussion of the riserva level bottling. Maybe that’s only made occasionally.
