07 Casanova di Neri ‘Rosso’ [Sant’Animo] I had to google this to figure out exactly what this is but apparently CdN makes both a Rosso di Montalcino and this bottling – labeled as Rosso di Casanova di Neri – which is from the Sant’Animo DOCG. So I guess they own some vineyards outside the main village. Dark ruby red, a couple mm of lightening at the glasses edge. It has smoke and saddle on the nose, and some cherries on the palate. The label states 14.5% abv, and over two days, served cool, it tastes hot, with an alcoholic burn when consumed without food. It’s been a while since I’ve tasted a wine that did that. Yet the 30 second flavors are good, and the medium body is nice for summer time, but maybe its not aging well. The SO noticed it too and didn’t finish her glass. I still enjoyed mine, but wouldn’t buy more for $20ish. I don’t know what the typical time frame that Giacomo Neri expects consumers to drink his smaller wines in - maybe they are better when fresher. I guess I’d give it a B, since I did like some elements of it. I really wanted to like this more – the kids made me a wonderful braised shank from Marina Market with steamed green beans to go with it.
