TN: 06 Cabot Syrah Aria's Vnyd

Yep, I’m a huge fan of this juice!

I had this a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it a lot, my favorite of a whole lineup of Cabots. Well this is showing even better tonight, a truly gorgeous expression of Syrah. Deeply colored but still translucent and glowing in the glass. Simply knockout aromatics make me swoon, floral, meaty and smokey with gunpowder and tar. Absolutely not a lick of heat to be found. The palate is incredibly juicy and fresh with lots of red fruit character and very present acidity, but then it gets all meaty and serious towards the finish. There is a stalky, green-peppercorn thing in there that really curls my toes. Dusty, fine tannins yet with a sappy palate that remains incredibly savory. There are lots of 91 and 92 point ratings on CellarTracker, but I am giving this a 93. This is a world class expression of Syrah, very special stuff. DISCLOSURE: The Cabots sent me a few sample bottles including this one. The $32 pricetag on this is a joke, as it frankly outperforms wines at 5 times the price. (93 pts.)

STG does White Burgundy and a bonus Cabot tasting (Gig Harbor, WA): Booyah! Crazy, sexy nose. Some stem (there is 50% whole cluster Syrah as well as 5% Viognier) is followed by an expressive nose of leather and meat. The palate is silky with soy and more meat. Did I mention this was sexy? My favorite of the lineup. Really awesome juice!

As I have written in prior posts, this is my favorite of the 2006 Cabot lineup, and that’s saying something because all of the 2006 Cabots are terrific.

Cabot did an excellent job on their 2006 Syrahs, enjoyed the whole lineup, but partial to the One Barrel. Has anyone tasted the 2007’s?

I’m guessing John and Kimberly have.

Thanks, looked like a fun evening too (especially the Bouchard Corton Charlemagnes - unfortunately the 2002 I had recently was flawed, the 2004 showed extremely well).

Last time tasting the Cabot lineup, thought the 2004 Kimberly’s was best, followed by the one barrel, the rest in order below. Appreciated the cold climate, meaty, aeromatic, everyday enjoyable quality of these wines, at very reasonable prices.

Look forward to tasting the full 2007 lineup . . . [cheers.gif]

Thanks for all the nice comments. Our fall mailer will be out soon with an offering for the first round of 07’s.

I think I’m placing an order tonight. I’m thinking of the three Syrahs. What do folks think of the Cab and Merlot?

Read the link to my notes.

Thanks for pointing that out. Just got in from the east coast earlier today and fighting some jet lag. Looks like I’m trying the bdx wines as well. You buying Betz Rhones this year?

Yes.

I will post more coherent notes in the morning, but I had the 07 Cabot Klamath Cuvee with a friend last week that was terrific and incredible qpr.
