I think it is the mysterious “terroir”. Calera also has this characteristic in many of its sv when they get some age on them.

Sorry to get to this late. I would guess the barrel regime has something to do with this bottling. Also, vintage heat might give the perception of warmer fruit notes.

Thanks for t note. I haven’t had many 03s that moved me. But I really haven’t had many 03s. Glad this one worked for you.

On the spice thing, I think location/vineyard plays a big part. It is consistently an element I find in vineyards like Brickhouse and Justice. With different producers. I would think plays a part but I still mainly associate it with the vineyard.

I can’t say I found very much “Burg” in the bottle of this I had a few months ago. Maybe in 10 years it will grow up.
