TN: 01 Domaine Leflaive Batard Montrachet

bought shortly after release–the 01 Leflaives were just about given away compared to current pricing–a nice bottle showing the power of Batard, yellow and white flowers and fruit, nice structure, a good clean wine, but not a wow in a Ramonet Batard way. Has the balance and acidity to age, but doubt it will really improve. Enjoyable and fine, but not something that stirred the soul.

Glad it was fresh though Alan. I tend to prefer Ramonet’s Batard too.

Had a humble Leflaive '09 Bourgoge yesterday that was really very good.

Best Regards
Jeremy

Leflaive did exceptionally well in 01, and was still in their pox-free period. I love the Ramonet Batard, but unfortunately in my experience the Ramonet 01s–including the Batard and the Chevalier–are poster children for the disease, great when right but too frequently just a mess.

The 01 Leflaive Chevalier earlier this year at Melisse was the WOTN in a night with 05 PYCM Corton Charlemagne, 85 DRC Richebourg, 88 Leroy Richebourg, 82 Cheval Blanc, and 2001 Yquem.

Awesome! I thought I’ve had more 01 Leflaives…but alas only the Puc. I REALLY like 01 white burgs, and am a HUGE believer that Ramonet just killed it! Have had some killer bottles of late……

  • 2001 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru (8/15/2014)
Dinner at Trelio (Clovis Ca.): Wow this is rich! Lot of smoke and caramel reduction, ripe yellow fruits, but with killer citrus lemon acidity to keep it fresh. Sautéed green apples in butter….exotic honey, chalk dust, match strike, creme brûlée, white flowers….sneaky alive….plenty and minerality and freshness to go with all the richness…nothing really blew off here….but I really liked it! (94 pts.)
  • 2001 Louis Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (8/2/2013)
Fu comes to town: Had with the 84…second time with this one…rich and creamy, loaded with ripe pit fruit, cut nicely with bright citrus and tons of crushed chalky minerals. Smoked vanilla bean, little truffle, exotic honey butter creme, spice…such purity…love how all that richness is lifted underneath with that huge acidity. Super wine! (97 pts.)
  • 2001 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (6/23/2013)
La Paulee 2.0 S.F.: Another super tasting 01 Ramonet! Spearmint came out later on as the wine warmed…fresh lemon/lime crystal clear fruit…lite flint strike, crunchy minerals…clean, pure, totally unique mint note Ramonet…but more faint than Chevy or Batard…Would have loved to drink this whole bottle…but alas I was only spitting. ;-( (95 pts.)
  • 2001 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (6/23/2013)
La Paulee 2.0 S.F.: Loaded with minerals…golden sea water…ripe yellow fruit, rich spice, honey, fresh yet substantial…would have loved to nurse on this awhile. (94 pts.)
  • 2001 Jean Boillot & Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru (6/23/2013)
La Paulee 2.0 S.F.: Along side 04/08 Leflaive Pucelles…this 01 showing a little more age than the Leflaives…rich honeyed, pit fruit, match strike…but still pretty good citrus and crushed mineral. (93 pts.)
  • 2001 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (9/4/2012)
S.F…La Paulee style! (S.F. Ca.): From mag. Had alongside the '01 Batard…this also showed the classic spearmint…beautiful fruit, more complex than the Batard with some tobacco, smoke, dusty spice, brulee crust…amazing white flower florals and mint…an “oh God” wine! (97 pts.)
  • 2001 Domaine Ramonet Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (9/4/2012)
S.F…La Paulee style! (S.F. Ca.): Had this alongside the '01 Chevy…wow…there is that spearmint! Pretty cool flavor to go along with the lemon/lime , pear fruit…crunchy minerality, spice…great young broad feel…aging well. (94 pts.)

Nice note and agree… The 01 Ramonet Chevy on the other hand is spectacular when sound imo. Also, agree with Jerry on the 01 Leflaive Chevy…super wine.

I remember when I bought an owc of the 01 leflaive chev then sold all but two bottles for my wedding. Sigh

Probably my least favorite GC wine from Leflaive, I actually prefer Pucelles to BM, but love the BBM and Chevy. Batard in general is a little to four square for me, regardless of producer.
