Thursday TNs: Two Walter Scott Chardonnays

Grilling up some salmon for dinner, and I was curious to see where the 2019 Freedom Hill was at, but you can’t only open one bottle, right?

  • 2018 Walter Scott Chardonnay Cuvée Anne - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (9/8/2022)
Might be my last 750 of this. Similar to my note back in May, nice notes of reductive flint on the nose. Good acidity and tart apple fruit on the palate. Not overly complex, but pretty delicious all the same. If someone was curious about what Walter Scott Chardonnays were all about, I often think this particular cuvee is the perfect intro to the "house style". Not as complex as the SVDs, but more to it than the entry level La Combe Verte.

I just enjoyed a glass of the 2018 Cuvee Anne, but this is a serious step up in quality. It has a similar reductive flint note on the nose, but really differentiates itself from the first wine by it's palate presence. I'm still tasting the finish as I type this note. Crisp & dry, with good acidity, this fans out on the palate and really makes you pay attention.

A wine that can be enjoyed with or without food, and one that goes down dangerously easy.

Agree on both wines. I really had a hard time keeping my hands off the 18 Cuvee Anne bottling as it was delicious and just kept grabbing it off the racks when I wandered in looking for something for the evening. I opened up a 19 Freedom Hill last week and was very impressed and yes it went down pretty easy.
So yes I think you hit it spot on with your notes.
I have only been on the Walter Scott list for about a year and a half but have really enjoyed the wines. I also really enjoyed the Rock Salt.

Opened a '19 La Combe Verte last night. I agree that the Cuvée Anne is worth the extra tariff. There was an interesting capsaicin note but not my favorite wine.

Josh, might be a typo…Cuvee Anne is or isn’t worth the $, as it’s not your favorite wine? TIA
