Three recent wines - 12 Monvigliero, 71 Mondavi and 05 Faiveley Combe Aux Moines

  • 2012 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (3/11/2017)
The producer that I wasn’t familiar with until my recent visit with Fabio. I was extremely impressed by the wine that I tried to source them upon my return. Unfortunately, I was only able to find two bottles. Pop and pour, subtle red fruit driven nose, fresh strawberry, cherry, rose and iron. Very polished and elegant palate that can be easily confused as soft and straightforward. The second day, more expressive red fruit, cherry and strawberry, sweet spices, a hint of animal, rose and earth. Very precise and elegant, nicely layered, candied cherry driven palate impression, good acidity, strong presence of iron/mineral and a long mineral driven finish. The third night, it gains even more weight, the expression becoming similar to the bottle tasted with Fabio. Subtle yet decadent red fruit, strawberry, cherry, blackberry jam, sweet spices, rose, sap, iron and earth. The palate remains very polished and elegant, lots of mineral/iron and a long seamless finish. Certain not trying to offend the hardcore Barolo lovers but I use “Burgundian” to describe a very precise, elegant and polished palate and this is very “Burgundian or more specific, Bonnes Mares like”. Quite enjoyable and very fascinating. (96 pts.)
  • 1971 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley (3/9/2017)
Classic Napa cab nose displaying cassis, plum, a hint of ash, lead pencil, eucalyptus, cedar and earth. Very good concentration, cassis and plum driven palate impression, fully resolved tannins a medium to long cassis driven finish. Not the most complex wine but with generous cassis fruit and classic cedar and pencil. The fruit is quite sweet. Really enjoyable and still alive and kicking. (92 pts.)
  • 2005 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combes aux Moines - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru (3/8/2017)
Very youthful slightly masculine nose displaying sweet black fruit, plum, caramel, iron, cedar/oak and earth. Excellent concentration, iron, blackberry and plum driven palate impression, medium acidity, mouth puckering dry tannins and a medium finish due to the obtrusive tannins. Will the tannins soften? I have never encountered such a tannic Burgundy, other than a few bottles of the 90s Remoissenet This will always remain a masculine wine, sort of the wine that Erwan’s father made.

I encountered the same problem recently. I guess you were one step ahead of me in the purchasing!

A great wine year in, year out. It’s interesting that you compared it to Bonnes Mares. I hadn’t gotten that specific, but it has always reminded me of Chambolle generally, with some strawberry fruit.
