Three new wines: US Pinot Noir, Chile & Argentiina Syrah

It is now long time when we got new good stuff last. But I now tried some new wines, so some notes appear here again!

First, I am liking the exploring of US wines, when we now have one more US Pinot, La Crema Pinot Noir Carneros 2007. Not cheap with prize of 30€ (too much I think!) but I like the wine. It is like consentrated cherry. It is sweet, it is spicey, it is nice oaky. This seems like real Pinot to me. It isn’t wimpy, girly wine, but is great aromatics with real fruit in it. I like it, but 30€ is too much…

I love, love, love Shiraz! So I was happy to drink Chile’s Viña San Pedro Syrah 1865 Limited Edition 2007! Wow! This is the good stuff! It smell like the dark, tar, sweet Shiraz of South Australia I love, but also it smell like peppar. It is big and powerfull, but not over top. This is like elegant and big in one bottle (this is rear I think). With 30€ for prize, I think it alot, but I like so much I think I will buy more for me.

I also drink one Syrah from Argentiina, Bodega Catena Zapata Syrah D.V. Catena 2007. It is 20€, and also seem like the 1865 from Chile: it has ripe Australia and not so sweet Europe feelings in it. The smell is ok & not much like oak but taste is like toffee but not sweet!!! I think it is not sofisticated wine drinking to like this wine, but I am not sofisticated person! I prefer the Chile Syrah but when that has expense, I think I drink this Catena more.

Ack! Here that’s about $18 or maybe 12€. It’s a good wine in that price range. You need to come visit us so your 30€ will go a bit further!

We appreciate the effort you are making to learn about US wines.

We quaffed a bottle of this – in about 8 minutes – while grilling burgers this afternoon. It hasn’t aged well to my palate, was basically red/liquid/alcohol, all desirable traits though when in front of 5 burners. Maybe it was better younger, or in a more favorable situation.

I am staggered by the price you paid. Also I do not think this a pure syrah blend.

Thanks for the notes!

I wonder how many California red wines are available to you, Juhani? Do you have a great selection?

I really have enjoyed several inexpensive Chilean and Argentinian wines, both the big, fruit-centered style, as well as the fresh, lighter ones.
