Thanks for the thoughts! Have definitely been unlucky on my end.
Yeah, my cellar is packed with 2020’s as well haha

That 2014 Batard Montrachet… yikes
I was in France when the 2014 vintage was the current release, and every single BTG chablis I had in every restaurant or wine bar, fancy or modest, was outstanding. Couldn’t go wrong, and this was mostly village level chablis.
The bottle we had last year was a bit developed and lacking the wow factor, but nothing to complain about. If you are talking premox that’s really separate from the vintage.
Huge fan of the 14s and the 17s, pretty much batting a 1000 with those vintages. Niellon has been my go-to in recent years, and their 14s have been sensational. I think their 17s are probably just as good but not as ready and not as opulent. I’ve had really good luck with Niellon’s 2016 Truffliere bottling as well.
I haven’t been nearly as impressed with the 19s and 20s I’ve had, but it’s been only a handful so far.
It was an issue with premox as you surmised, I served @Greg_K this particular bottle on Monday.
Yeah, I had a horribly premoxed 17 BM recently also.
Yes, though I also had an underwhelming 2014 Vergers Friday night which wasn’t premoxed (consistent with ongoing Ramonet experiences).
2014 need a bit mor time vs the 2017s which are instant sensations. I clearly prefer 2017 for current drinking.
I love the 14 white burgundy vintage. I just checked and have opened 105 bottles, so I have a pretty good read on the vintage.
34 PYCM
18 Boillot
12 Roulot
11 Dauvissat
10 Raveneau
And then a whole bunch of other producers in single digit quantities.
The combination of ripe fruit and lively acidity is very compelling in this vintage. I find the vintage benefits from at least a couple of hours of air, as the wines can be tight and not giving when first opened.
Any premox issues on the PYCM? Just curious.
None so far.
I opened a horribly premoxed Boillot CC last week, after having 4 excellent bottles. I am not planning to hold for the long term my Boillots, Roulots and Dauvissats due to premox concerns.
Any particular reason you asked? I’ve never had a poxed pycm out of hundreds of bottles.
I’ve also had good luck with PYCM, but my sample size is more like 15 bottles total, so I was just interested in the data point from someone who clearly drinks the producer often. I’m fairly early in my collecting journey at 35, so I’m making some very consequential decisions on what I’m choosing to lay down given that White Burg is the largest category in my cellar.
I personally believe that anything under cork is at risk of oxidation and I wish everyone would just move to DIAM. Including Raveneau & Coche. I actually opened my first bottle of advanced Raveneau this year (a 2008 Blanchot). It was still clearly drinkable, but was showing signs of oxidation. It was for a large group so I actually opened 2 bottles from the same case side by side and they were night and day different wines, so I’m confident in the groups assessment of oxidation.
Funny enough I’ve never had a poxed Dauvissat and I drank 20+ bottles in the last year (in no way am I denying that they have had an issue, but maybe it’s past? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I only buy wax capsule Dauvidssat? Who knows. It’s also surprising to me how different people’s opinions can be. I’ve heard many people assert that Roulot and Boillot are some of the best producers for avoiding premox, yet I’ve had terrible luck with both… Anyway - rant over. I have a lot of Raveneau and Dauvissat and I’ve really become fascinated with Chassagne so hopefully Paul Pillot, PYCM, & Lamy Caillat prove to be good bets
14 amazed me on release. First one I had was a Billaud-Simon MdT in Eze, France May 2016, so good I had to post and alert the world about 2014 Chablis.
Is Dauvissat still under natural cork? I was reading the premoxed white Burg wiki and didn’t see them listed as being under DIAM now.
Also, seems like Dauvissat’s premox issues are heavily vintage by vintage dependent?
Dauvissat is still under natural cork, and there is a long list of Berserkes that have sworn off Dauvissat with well documented issues of Premox. supposedly 2008 was particularly bad. Most of my experience has been with wines from 2010 - 2017 and I haven’t had any issues yet, but I’m sure it will happen at some point. I only buy bottles with wax capsules.
I’ll answer your question again with some numbers after seeing more context in the subsequent posts.
I’ve opened 224 bottles of PYCM over the last 14 years and have had exactly 1 bottle that was premoxed, a 2005 Meursault Perrieres that was opened in 2018. I’ve had 4 bottles that were corked, so with this producer I’m more worried about a wine being corked than premoxed.
Wow, that is a pretty dang good. Thanks for sharing!
That’s the first one I had too - at a Wildmam trade tasting in March 2016. I returned to my office and immediately bought some from Envoyer.
