I thought it might be fun to start a semi-comprehensive list of all the wines he’s made over the years. One of the motivations is that I was going to get the Dallas crew together to drink a bunch blind. I think there might be some surprises in there in terms of where they all rank when tasted blind.
So, start throwing out names (along with vintages) and I’ll update this original post as the list goes along to keep people from having to search for any particular wine.
I’ll start with a little bit of an odd one:
Whites:
04-05 Sans Permis Wayfarer Chardonnay
Maybach Chardonnay
TRM Chardonnay
Reds:
RM Cabernet
RM Pinots
Round Pond
Saunter
2005 James Johnson Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Cålìn
• Winemaker, Schrader Cellars since 2001
• Winemaker, Aston Estate since 2001
• Winemaker, Vieux-Os since 2001
• Winemaker, Double Diamond since 2002
Outpost
Schrader
Two Hands
Maybach
Wallis Family (starting in 2008)
Jones Family
Diamond Terrace
Tom Seaver
Chiarello
Hestan Vineyards (starting in 2009)
Black Sears
Casa Piena Cabernet
Harris
From a wine on our website-- “Winemaker Thomas Brown worked the 1997 harvest for Kent Rasmussen before becoming an assistant winemaker for Ehren Jordan, winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars and consultant to a number of other high profile California wineries. Today, Thomas consults for Outpost, Maybach, Schrader, and Two Hands in addition to his own Pinot Noir project, Rivers-Marie.”
I also believe he makes Tamber Bey. One of his proteges I believe is Jeff Ames of Tor and Rudius fame.
Here from Shrader–
• Winemaker, Schrader Cellars since 2001
• Assistant Winemaker, Turley Wine Cellars, 1997 - 2001
• Winemaker, Aston Estate since 2001
• Winemaker, Vieux-Os since 2001
• Winemaker, Double Diamond since 2002
Although known for his Cabs, in my opinion he is one of the best Pinot producers in California right now.
Hestan Vineyards (Beginning with ‘09 vintage)
After three years as assistant winemaker to Ehren Jordan at Turley, he went out on his own as a consulting winemaker in 2000. His first two clients were Outpost and Chiarello.
He also makes the wine for Black Sears though I’m not sure when that started but probably around the same time as Outpost.
Mike Smith now makes Tamber Bey. Another “protege”.
it would be nice to see what years he was at each Wine and then the current winemakers that started as an assistant to TRB
The Tom Seaver wines go by GTS and they are stunning.Tom poured at our charity event for C/F last May and I immediately signed up there on the spot. They offer two bottlings, the Estate Cabernet Diamond Mountain, and the Nancy’s Fancy Diamond Mountain District Cab blend.
Bud - I would go so far as to say the GTS is Thomas’s best wine…though I doubt he would say so. It is the most balanced and the wine with the most finesse by far. Folks who are not Napa Cab-aholics like this wine very much.
Jay - When did Thomas start making Bisou? I had a 2001 awhile back and found them soft and delicious, but not what I would call TRB’s house style. That’s James Johnson’s wine, right?
