Thomas Keller restaurant closing Dec 1…Canary in the wine cave?

La Calenda.

“Keller announced the decision on Instagram, saying it was too difficult to make the restaurant viable after this year’s economic downturn in Napa Valley and ‘a lack of local traffic.’”

Another ominous sign of downstream effects in Napa.

Surprised I never heard of it. We went to Napa the last two Junes.

Well, crap. Have been there several times, always enjoyable. A nice, casual alternative to all the fancy in Yountville.

Not sure it means more than any other restaurant closing. It was his least well know in Yountville and a bit off brand IMHO.

But Where will the people ever go for $8 tacos now?

It seems to imply a hollowing out of the non-tourist. He’s not closing down the higher end, tourist driven restaurants. The economy is increasingly tilted to those who need $250 cabs like a hole in the head. I would think the implication is greater pent up risk in the local economy, as people may eventually start accepting holes in the head than $250 cabs.

He closed his restaurant in Hudson yards, is it the canary in the coal mine for NYC?

Don’t worry. It’s all going to be great soon.

You don’t think a TK restaurant is more significant than “any other restaurant?”

Only if it’s objectively better rather than just more famous.

Any Idea when? :tangerine: :jack_o_lantern: :poop:

Wait and see.

So Yountville will be down to 4 Keller restaurants then?

Never been to La Calenda. As long as El Molino Central in Sonoma and Mothers Tacos in Napa are open, I’ll never make it as far as Yountville for Mexican food

Pretty much. I don’t know anyone who has gone there, but a ton of people who have gone to all of his other restaurants. Mexican food is not really thought of as an oenophile’s go-to cuisine. When I’m in Napa, I’m thinking Bouchon, Mustards, etc., not $15 flautas (that being said, they do sound very good).

Both good places. Though very different from La Calenda. And not remotely close to Yountville if you’re staying there

I thought Bouchon was in Yountville. I ate there once but maybe I was confused.
