Thomas 2019

My check was cashed yesterday and the wine showed up today. Off to the cellar for a few years.

Check was cashed on the 15th. No note, no tracking yet for me

Check cashed yesterday, so now waiting for vino!

I bit the bullet and opened a 750ml bottle of 2019 last night. I have to say that, despite the rather forbidding reputation Thomas’ pinots have while young, the 2019 is phenomenal. Like, I thought I enjoyed pinot noir, but this was an entirely different experience (in a good way). I have never, ever, enjoyed a New World pinot as much at this. It’s delicious now, but you can absolutely tell that something great is waiting in the wings.

It’s going to be difficult to keep my grubby mitts off of the rest of the bottles!

My order is on the way!

I was notified a couple weeks past that the winter shipping window closed on me due to my local temps. He indicated that I was not alone, and that all of us who live in colder geographic areas will get there wine shipped in the spring of 2022. You being in Scottsdale…I have no ideas.

I received mine this week in PA, came from Avalon Wine Portland

Received mine about 3 weeks ago to Texas…

Received mine in Louisville KY 3 days ago. I got the “Full Monty” and I will say it was just about the most difficult case to open, but I’m thrilled to have anyway!

I sent an email to the address posted earlier in the thread last night - is it likely I’ll get a reply?

I would think so. I successfully used the email to join the list, but only after the 2019s were sold out.

Cool, although sounds like might not know until 2023 if there won’t be 2020s…

JimJP, I would imagine that John will provide a thoughtful response in the near future, but based on JMReuter’s note it appears that John is sold out at the winery. If you are interested in 2019 Thomas, I would suggest checking with select Portland retailers for availability. Good luck.

John confirmed previously there will be no 2020s due to smoke taint. Thus, I bought 2019s accordingly. Here’s to hoping you all are able to find some on the secondary market. I believe the secret is out on John’s operation…

Andrew Turner @ Valley Wine Merchants usually has Thomas and a few others. I think other threads have mentioned other retailers. Look forward to hearing more 2019 tasting notes! I have a 2018 that I am looking to get into, but haven’t had the chance to do so yet.

got mine yesterday, located in Boston

Copied from CT:

Figured I’d do my public duty and take one for the team.

Pale ruby, translucent, thin

Nose w/ tart cherry, bramble. Same on palate at 5 min after opening. Acidity is definitely up front but not overpowering. Tannins are fairly reserved and uniformly grainy. Will see how this evolves through the night.

Pleasant now but definitely prepubescent. However, I wouldn’t call this an awkward 6th grader, more like that kid who could grow a moustache at age 12. As many have said before, these elegantly bridge Old World and New World Pinot.

Will wait at least a couple of years before opening again. Glad I have a bunch more as the delayed gratification is definitely rewarded with these.

Appreciate the note, Ted. Saw it on CT too! Was curious if you could dig into more the comment " acidity is definitely up front but not overpowering"… for example, did you find this vintage to be more acidic than other vintages, sas it higher acid vs just come off more fresh, Would you characterize the wine as being very high toned? Curious how you would describe the acidity as it seems to be the primary thing you noticed upon tasting.

So I tasted on the initial pour from the decant within about 5 minutes of opening. First thing I noticed was the bright acidity. Again, not unpleasant, but quite in-your-face. I can’t really say how this compares to prior vintages since I this was the first vintage I’ve tried within a few weeks of receiving. I totally agree with others that these show better if given a few years to settle in, if one can wait that long. Given a couple hours decanting, the acidity seemed to come back in line and, at least for me, a 2+hour decant is needed to get a more accurate feel of what this wine offers. I am currently drinking about 5 hours into the decant right now and it is very, very good. There is a brightness/freshness to the acidity but it is more nuanced and not as brash as before. Contrast that with something like a Merry Edwards or Williams Selyem, where the first note, to me at least, always seems to be the fruit forwardness regardless of how long after a decant (delicious, but somewhat monolithic to my taste). Thomas is much more nuanced - you have to pay attention to the wine as there are layers of acid, tannin, fruit, and earth that seem to show themselves more in an Old World style.
Not sure about how you would define “high toned”. I went to public school and we weren’t taught many adjectives…
Not sure if that helps.

Thanks Ted! I’m lucky enough to have received “The Full Monty” (6 750’s and 3 Mags), but this note reaffirms that I will try my first in 2-3 years. Perhaps I will try a '17 in a few months and see where it is.
