Got the recessed lights in and then pulled the vapor barrier behind the interior stud walls. It was a a major pain but actually came out quite well. Vapor barrier for the exterior stud wall on the inside to prevent winter condensation in the wall cavity.
Water resistant drywall went in today:
Anyone have a good recommendation for a thermometer that will log the temp? Humidity would be nice too. Now that everything is insulated it will be interesting to see what the temp holds at.
Got at least R30 around the top of the steam pipe, but didn’t get a lot other than the 2-inch pipe insulation on the bottom. There is a dedicated circuit and a cut out for a chiller but I would love to avoid it if possible. Walls are R13 plus about 1-2 inches behind the stud walls, probably R15 to R20 overall. Ceiling is R22 (foam board and fiberglass insulation).
Taping will happen the rest of this week and then time for paint. Feels good that it finally looks like a room again!
One thought - mark the floor somehow (masking tape?) for where the studs are, so it will be easy to find them when you put up the racks and want to secure them to the walls.
Thanks for the temperature probe recommendation Bill, bummed I missed out on the deal.
Andrew, thanks for the tip, I’ll keep that in mind when I get around to getting some paint on the walls.
Looking forward to getting the racks ordered. Anyone have good/bad experiences with Wine Racks America out of Salt Lake City? Other recommendations for racking?
Highly recommended. I bought the racking for my entire cellar for them years ago. Just recently I redid a small portion and bought more racking from then, excellent experience.
Bob, unfortunately time is what I’m short on. I thought about that initially as they are pretty simple design and construction, but don’t think I can swing it. I have a really good carpenter/cabinet builder I am going to run it by and see if he wants to do it.
Andrew, ordered the LaCrosse this morning with the wet probe, apparently my reading comprehension is suffering.
Andrew/Nick, thanks for the reviews. I may go with my local carpenter, but if not I think I will go with them. Do you guys have the standard or the five star? I will likely need to mix and match as the soffit height precludes the use of the standard height racks, but I don’t see a double deep in the five star? Once everything is taped and sanded I will get final measurements and give them a call.
Stained and varnished the door as well, finally starting to look like a cellar!
Next step is to trim out the door, just waiting on matching knotty alder trim.
Anyone have good luck with LED conversion buds in recessed fixtures…they’re not cheap but are advertised as never needing to change the bulb and that they run cool.
I like the door. I really wanted a fancy door for my cellar but in the end decided to go with your standard Home Depot exterior door so not to advertise to potential thieves that something special lies in that locked room…
Wow, looks great. We have similar taste in color too, looks just like the color I used in mine. On racks, I also bought the kits from Wine Racks America and would highly recommend.
Plenty of recent articles, but how much are you going to use the lights? Even an hour a day and the typical halogen bulb, rated for 2000 hours, will last 5-6 years. And they’re not going to generate a huge amount of heat in that short time.
Talked with the Wine Racks America guy today, should have a preliminary design sometime tomorrow. For those who ordered redwood from them, was it heartwood or sapwood primarily?
Andrew, lights won’t be on for all that long and I will have a standard CFL fixture in there as well. Everything is on dimmers too. What did you go with in your cellar?
Nice work by the way!! Just trying to decide if the low energy usage and long life justify the price of the LED conversion bulbs.
Kellie, if your ever in SW Colorado, drop me a line.
Joe, will take bookings for cellar consultations, you just need to supply the airfare and GC burg
More sapwood than heartwood, but usually you could flip the racks to hide the sapwood a bit.
On lights I used Par20 cans with 50w halogen bulbs. Hasn’t created a heat problem. When they burn out in 5 years I’ll see where LED prices are. Nothing against LEDs, but I think the value isn’t quite there Ye.
