Is this your guy? Sounds big:
@brianfung
if you’re a wine storage customer at esquin, you need to go check on your wine. there was a major theft there…I’ve lost 000’s of $$

(And I know this is the Tweet you saw, since you replied to it.)
The whole thing is a total mess. I lost thousands too and there are going to be a lot of losses from the looks of it. Eric, need another option on why I’m removing a bottle from my cellartracker… “stolen” isn’t a current option. A bit of gallows humor, so disappointed about the lost bottles.
I don’t understand… What happened?
Is this real? Could not find any info on the internet for a theft.
Yes it is real. It isn’t in the news yet. Very professional job, I was down there this afternoon doing an inventory of what I lost. Almost all the large formats, case of Leonetti, Doubleback and QC. They were very selective, left the CdP that was right next to the QC. Many lockers were broken into but the thieves attempted to cover their tracks by putting things back.
Sorry to hear about that Kevin, are you insured? Any idea how many bottles were taken, they were obviously cherry picking.
No insurance through Esquin, homeowners covers a little but I needed (and didn’t have) a wine rider for full coverage. So I’m basically out of luck, get your wine rider would be the lesson. No idea on total bottles taken but about $14k (cost not appreciated value) out of my shared locker. Saw at least 5-10 other lockers that were compromised (screws out of hinges, door kicked in, etc).
Kevin, the cop in me want’s to know if they had an alarm system and video surveillance??
They did. The thieves covered the alarm sensors and spray painted the camera lenses before cutting through the back wall to gain access through a deadbolted door. They also apparently attempted to blow up the building to cover their tracks (no I’m not kidding). Very fluid situation, Chuck from Esquin is clearly upset and is attempting to gather the facts as best as he can. This is a very professional type job, not some random hoodlums that got in.
I’m curious to see what the final tally is; it must be pretty significant if they were trying to level the place.
I’m sorry for all that were impacted by this.
I would recommend using “Missing or presumed drunk” and adding a private consumption note to the effect of “stolen.”
Sorry for what you have to go through here.
+1. Sucks big time.
any chance a comprehensive tally of what was stolen can be compiled as a watch list for auctions and other potential bulk sales outlets? Not perfect, but if someone shows up with 100 cases that match it should raise some questions.
These professional storage facilities don’t have insurance?
+1 Wouldn’t basic business insurance cover things like fire and theft?
Why would this be different than an apartment building? The owners coverage is for their loss not the tenants. The tenants need to insure their own belongings.
Or put another way, how can the building owner insure the tenants belongings without knowing what is housed in the storage unit and the value?
There has to be more to the story
