My dad has always indulged my love for wines, and especially Cabernet. During a business trip back in the mid 80s he had passed through the valley and purchased me a bunch of Jordan’s of different vintage. Every year he received a gift of a case of Jordan and always told me to go the the cellar and get a bottle for dinner when we visited. (They were stored in the garage). The fact he thought of me out there and hampered himself with carrying 4/5 bottles back to NY was a testament to his greatness in fatherhood.

Yesterday I had taken my wife, children and two dogs to visit my parents in Connecticut for Christmas eve. We had a really great day. Upon giving out the gifts he kept telling me he had gotten me a gift I will talk about for many years. My mom comes out from a back room and puts a holiday themed shopping bag at my feet. Looking down I spied 3 bottles: 2 2007 Jordan Cabernets and 1 Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio. Pretty cool huh?
BTW, I still have a 1980 and 1983 from that trip in my cellar.

The Jordans in my cellar are better than any Cult could ever hope to be…

My mother-in-law enjoys getting me wine gadgets. This year it is a Corcksicle: a fake icicle with a wooden handle that you freeze than put INTO the wine to chill it.

OTOH, my wife got me a structured, leather travel case that holds two bottles. Perfect for taking wine to restaurants. It will replace the cheap neoprene one I’ve been using for years now.

I received 2 of Byron Dooley’s 2008 wines, the chardonnay and Willamette Valley pinot noir. In addition, I was given a bottle of 1996 Brick House Willamette Valley pinot. It was very cold when I got it so I’ll have to ask how it’s been stored. If it’s been this cold the whole time it could be a stunner.

And I gave myself a mixed case of Ed Fus’ zinfandels and primitivos along with six bottles of the 2008 Seven Hills Columbia Valley cabernet.

The only wine I got was a joint Xmas, and birthday present with my wife from a good friend in Tokyo. Last year he gave us an 07 Echezeaux, Rouget (George Jayer), this year he got us an 08 La Tache! He always does this and we are always embarrassed by it, but he won’t stop saying thank you for all the fun he has with us!

My Mom gave me one of these and a Vinturi. I haven’t had a chance to try the sicle, but did put the Vinturi through it’s paces tonight on an '06 RM cab and the results exceeded my expectations. I’ll be using this on young cabs, syrahs and zins for sure, but not yet convinced about pinot, chards or white burgs.
