The Vodka Thread

Post your favorite vodkas and vodka recipies… I’ve never really cared much for vodka but a recent trip changed that. Of course, where I was couldn’t possibly have influenced my favor of this newly found libation… Pau Maui Vodka. Distilled from… you guessed it… pineapples. Of course, zero pineapple flavor and zero sweetness. Just good extremely clean flavor and maybe a little tooooooo smooooooth.

Truly refreshing in:

Greyhound
Up with a Twist
Odwalla Pomagrand with a splash of OJ

Mark - where is this treasure found?

Chopin.

Up w/ a twist.

+1, MEGA dry (keep the vermouth in the bottle, closed)

Chopin with a twist is the best vodka martini out there.

It used to only be available on Maui. But, when I got home I asked my local liquor shop if they could order a case for me and they had it in a week (not sure who their distributor is). Made in small lots. Each bottle individually numbered (526 out of 3000… etc). Around $65. Damn! Maybe I shouldn’t have let the cat out of the bag. Nah. ENJOY!

That’s pretty pricey, but still sounds worth a try!

I actually wish it had a bit of pineapple essence in it, though - that might be interesting.

Boyd & Blair. It goes down like water. Love it!

Over many years of research, especially at Red Square in Vegas, this turned out to be the clear winner.

Best tasting, best value, best overall…Youri Dolgoruki.

It’s getting harder to find these days, but well worth the effort.

Tito’s

Ketel One
Grapefruit
Campari
Twist

Coat inside of lowball glass with lemon rind
Rocks
Pour Ketel One 3/4
Squeeze Fresh grapefruit juice in glass
Top with Campari
Add twist.

Mmmmmmm!

I am a fan.

T&T, Tito’s and tonic with a healthy squeeze of fresh lime juice…what summer cocktailing is all about.

My favorite was Ciroc, until a couple of years ago when one of our interns brought some Xellent Vodka. His mother owns a liquor distributorship, and he had access to some good stuff. It is from Switzerland, and is made from rye. It almost has a slight chocolate flavor to me. Definitely dangerous. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), I have not been able to find it around here.

Jewel of Russia Ultra…spasibo bolshoi!

there is a good article in the most recent WS on vodka

I don’t get the hype for Tito’s. Great story, well priced, but there are other vodkas I definitely prefer taste-wise in the same price range i.e. luksusowa, zytnia. Maybe I’ll give it another shot…

Two serious questions:

  1. What is the point of drinking Vodka (since it is essentially flavorless)?

  2. How can you justify the pricing of some of these things (which are unaged) when you can buy 15 year old Rum or Bourbon for $30 or even less?

I have just never understood either of these.

Personal preference and variety of course!

I don’t spend more than $30 on any vodka I buy. IMO, for the “high-end” vodkas you’re primarily paying for packaging and marketing costs.

The AFE love vodka, you basically pay extra the more odorless and tasteless the vodka gets!
