The thread where we help each other identify that one half-remembered bottle

Everyone seems to have a mystery wine in their deep memory. Mine are, both from around 2005-06.:

  1. A Minervois red, probably sub-$30 - it had monks on the label.

  2. Kermit Lynch imported a Madiran. There is a good chance it was Chateau De Perron - I’m just looking for alternatives.

Help!

Disappointed in the thread. I though Chris was volunteering to come to my house and find all the bottles I know I have someplace but have lost in the chaos of my basement. Sigh.

Can’t help with your 2 wines Chris but wish you the best of luck.

Kermit doesn’t currently show a Madiran in the portfolio, and I don’t remember one from around this time. I used to be in the business and went on the KL buying trips from 2009-2014, so either it was a producer they stopped importing or it was another importer. The closest KL got to Madiran then was the Arretxea Irouleguy or the Clos La Coutale Cahors.

Why not just call the KL store…I bet someone there would remember if they ever had a Madiran.

Kermit did import Chateau de Perron at one point.

Christmas 2016-2018 I bought a Gevrey Chambertin Villages that was incredible. It cost $85 at The Proper Pour in Denver and the owner at the time said it was a great value at the time. All I remember was it looked like it had a traditional style label. How many Gevrey producers can there be, and how much can a simple Villages cost these days?

As a retailer I can say that I usually remember my favorites “Christmas wines” (to sell) from years past.
Also it being an $85 villages should really narrow it down.
You’ve probably asked the shop?

Good call - I did and the Perron is the only one they can remember.

Indeed. The label doesn’t look right but at this point I don’t trust myself.

All I remember is the wine spashed on paper was as black as India Ink.

Sadly the shop went out of business in COVID
