The most shockingly awful 'fine' wine you've had the misfortune to experience

I take back that the Capo’s are the “most” awful. I forgot about 1997 Duck Muck consumed in 1999.

A Regusci merlot. Forget which vintage. Wish I could forget the experience.

Ray,

You’re making this too easy… [berserker.gif]

“I love poking fun at the alcohol phobes;the prissy pleasure police on the board will no doubt be reporting this wine to the Dept.of Homeland Security as a potential weapon of mass pleasure…I have always believed that if a wine tastes good it is good…not very complicated…if it tastes hot then it is too high in alcohol… whether the label says 11% or 15%…liberate your mind and palate…don’t read the label…just taste the wine…need I say it is what’s in the glass that counts…” Robert Parker, 11-22-2005

Dan,

While I know you are kidding I will give you some background on my Capo experiences.

I had never liked the wine which was confirmed by a pegau dinner I attended three or four years ago. Three different Capo vintages were served and I said I hated them all. Only one person agreed with me. One of the people who disagreed with me handed me a glass of wine and said “which vintage of Pegau is this?” - I said not sure but it’s definitely one of the Capo’s. It was.
A few weeks later I’m having dinner hosted by one of the people at the aforementioned Pegau dinner. All wines served blind. Fourth or so flight, four wines are poured. I say two of the wines are undrinkable. Both were Capo’s.
Last time I’ve ever had one.
And please, nobody serve it to me blind again.

My recent roadkill:

  • 2004 Opus One - USA, California, Napa Valley (10/4/2009)
In the mid-90s, Mondavi was one of the Napa wineries that had bucked the more is better trend. Not anymore. Dark, thick, sweet and heavy, with lots of wood tannin drying out the finish. I wouldn’t drink this at any price. (70 pts.)
  • 2003 Domaine de la Mordorée Lirac Cuvée de la Reine des Bois - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Lirac (12/1/2008)
So dark it’s almost black in the center, with the dark colors saturated to the rim. Blueberries, blackberries and alcohol dominate the nose. Taste combines ripe black fruits and just a touch of earthiness. Tannins are smooth, but come off bitter against the sweet, stewy fruit, a point emphasized on the hot finish. So concentrated that it comes off heavy and think, almost syrupy. Drank poorly alone, but was even worse with food. Tried to match this with a reasonably mild, red pozole and the wine just disappeared. How does that happen to such a heavy, concentrated wine? I got through one glass the first night and two sips the second. The rest went down the drain. I used to buy Mordoree back in the 80’s and don’t remember it being anything like this. Just a mess and not suitable for anything but perhaps dragging out at the end of a long night when the food’s gone and everyone’s palate is shot. (70 pts.)
  • 2006 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Clio - Spain, Murcia, Jumilla (10/24/2009)
Yeegads. Sweet and alcoholic. DNPIM. (65 pts.)
  • 2006 Woodward Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley (7/15/2009)
Undrinkably oaky. Just disgusting. One sip and then some time to see if the heavily charred American oak flavors (think Jack Daniels) would blow off. They didn’t. $96 on a wine list. I ordered two glasses of rose and my two dining companions left half the bottle. I have very fond memories of Woodward Canyons’ wines from the 80s, so this just hurt. (60 pts.)
  • 2005 Martin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Bacchanal Rutherford - USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford (2/5/2009)
What kind of wood are they using in Napa these days? Old whiskey barrels? This tastes like someone poured a half shot of Maker’s Mark into my wine. Do people really want their wine to taste like Bourbon? In fairness, no one else at the table complained, but to me this was just disgusting. (50 pts.)

Let me echo '03 Monbosquet, and add '05 Mollydooker Carnival of Love

Ringland Shiraz. Wouldn’t want a free case unless I could sell it.

The 07 Pontet Canet at UGC was bordering on overripe. I’ve never smelled a Bordeaux like that before and hope to never again. [swoon.gif]

As much as I loved the Troplong Mondot 90 shortly after its release, I must agree that it can be a harrowing experience to try to go through one. Very, very bad but not nearly as bad to me as the 97 Harlan that is foder for an entire thread here and there and took VA to a new meaning for me. Very Awful.

Hello James,

Similar to your 03 Lirac, a wine that gets me steaming with aesthetic indignation is Gigondas Prestige des Hautes Garrigues from Domaine Santa Duc. Any bloody vintage, all are repulsive. They are just horribly overblown monstrosities with no charm or pleasant characteristics to them. They are depressingly hard work to drink, don’t go with food and you just feel jaded and shagged out after a few tastes. I mixed most of the last bottle I popped with soda water and served it iced; it was still vile. Utterly abhorrent filth, how it can be rated highly by some writers I just cannot begin to understand.

Cheers,
David.

1995 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Valbuena 5° - interesting in a weird way, but not enjoyable.

2002 Louis Jadot Macon Villages Chardonnay granted, it isn’t exactly fine, but it literally smelled like $hit.

I’ve tried two Mollydookers and hated them both. One was The Boxer, don’t know what the other was.
Also a Marquis Philips - Sarah’s Blend I think. That isn’t something I want to drink.

I poured away a 2002 Pinder Cabernet last year that was undrinkable crap.

Love bagging on shyte wines…

  • 2005 Château Charron - France, Bordeaux, Côtes de Blaye, Premières Côtes de Blaye (11/9/2008)
It takes an almost supernatural lack of wine-making talent to make a Bordeaux this bad in 2005. Congrats to the owners of this Chateau… (60 pts.)
  • 1982 Erich Salomon/Undhof Riesling Pfaffenberg - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal (1/20/2009)
Awful stuff. Bitter and metallic. Predictably, a library release. Why do producers hold their worst (read non-selling) wines for library releases and hope nobody notices? (65 pts.)
  • 2004 Bodega Numanthia Termes Toro Numanthia - Spain, Castilla y León, Toro (4/23/2009)
Tastes like and has the consistency of engine oil. Well-stored, so it’s the fault of the wine, not anything else. Can’t believe I ever liked this at the tasting I attended - I suppose my palate has evolved. This wine was decidedly not cooked, corked, or chemically flawed, I know what those are like, it’s just hideously over-extracted and over-oaked. Sold my stock. (68 pts.)
  • 2000 Domaine Tempier Bandol - France, Provence, Bandol (1/12/2010)
Totally not a fan of this taste profile. Bitter bark, sharp cumin spice, maybe some fruit buried underneath it but I’m not sure. It’s a bit like drinking liquefied rye bread (and I HATE rye bread). Completely unattractive. (70 pts.)

Todd - you don’t know how reassuring it is to hear someone echo the concern with the Monbousquet. And that is a wine with a following. But I thought it was horrid. Kept hoping the funkiness would blow off - man, that could be open for weeks and all that would be left would be the funk.

In that case you can add Sake to my answer.

A friend of mine came back from a business trip to China and brought back “something”. We weren’t entirely sure what it was.
It was vile. It may well have been baiju; it seemed pretty strong, but not as strong as Soju.

Another friend visited Tokyo on business. He’s a scotch drinker, so when they all went out one evening he ordered a whisky.
The bartender offered him some water with it, but he was most insistent that in the UK we always drink whisky neat.

Then he tasted it.

It was a Japanese whisky, not a scotch. “Suntory Old” I believe. He said it tasted like paint thinner.
And so as not to offend his hosts he was stuck drinking it all evening.

Why you being kind to me on this one now?

Mark, That Futo was F**ked!

I once had a 1947 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña that was all tire rubber and sucked so I gave it a 51, even though I was out of my league… [wink.gif]
