The Garagiste Thread (The Great Enabler) Back to Life

What does “prearrived” even mean? It’s both future and past tense.

I told them I didn’t want to wait and asked for a substitute wine. Got that case and think I’m done with the wines for a while. Waiting on the next Baci di Dama offer. God I love those cookies.

Whoa whoa. What was the substitute?

Ah, honestly i just told them to give my a big bold cab instead that i could drink right away. They gave me a 2016 Va Piano Rosebud Cab. Nothing super exciting there.

More mysteries revealed:

KF - Weber? VM and WA 96 I believe

Thanks for the update!

Weber is definitely a candidate. I see some 2022 labels with WineSpies sales - Weber, Maresh Golden Crowned; guessing that’s a clue?

I’m officially done with Garagiste. They are straight up liars. The Pauillac mystery: “The actual 2019 Grand Vin trades for, well, a commensurate Pauillac Grand Vin $ (you can do the math).” The bottle I received is Chateau Haut-Pauillac. Owned by Chateau Fonbadet. That wine trades for $30. Hardly would call this a grand vin commensurate with Pauillac.

We have a wine no one will buy for $29, how can we make up a story that will get someone to buy this wine? Let’s lie and call it a grand vin of Pauillac. I did the math, Garagiste. You won, Garbagiste.

Every Bordeaux mystery Ive bought has been a disappointment. I just stick to Italian mysteries, they are almost always solid. Or buy singles just out of curiosity.

fine. This one was a straight up lie to sell wine. The wine itself isn’t terrible. It is very Bordeaux cab and the restrained side of things. There is a touch of Brett but not in a way I would personally call a fault. It’s completely serviceable. I have a problem with how it was sold. It’s a $30 wine that tastes like a $20 wine.

I stopped buying mysteries a while back. Usually a nominal savings on a bottle I normally wouldn’t buy. But usually a solid wine. Some things I was happy with, like a $50 Grand Cru Chablis. But it was going for sub $80 in the nethersphere, so not a prize bottle.

The GC Chablis mysteries are usually things like Servin. Solid deals but like you say, not prize bottles.

You were able to speak to a human?

Had an email conversation with a human. No speaking. All that said, I will be sticking to their unique pantry items from here on out.

I know it’s hard to afford customer service staff who can get on the phone, but that’s been a frustration for me.

If you’re selling $20 wine for $30, you can probably afford it but choose not to. Considering their pricing and the added shipping costs, I wouldn’t consider anything I’ve bought from them as value purchases. They make every other outlet, WTSO, winespies, last/first bottle, and Vivino look great.

I looked at my Bordeaux purchases from Garagiste and indeed the mysteries all were disappointments, but there were a bunch of decent deals otherwise. I bought a lot of Meyney for a lot less than what it was available in the US at the time. I just opened a 2022 Tronquoy, which at $28 was a hell of a lot better deal than your Haut-Pauillac.

I’ll add another “Garagiste rule” to my rulebook. Never buy Bordeaux mysteries.
(It was discussed a while back already when a bunch of us bought a White bdx mystery. The blurb said it was from “a very famous chateau”. That very famous chateau has exactly one entry in Cellartracker, and that’s from the Garagiste sale. That was pretty blatant lie as well.
(and the wine sucked).

My current view is that mysteries from named Rhône appellations like Crozes, CdP, Gigondas, priced below $20, and most Italian mysteries (certainly those below $50) are safe bets. It has been many years since I’ve bought any mystery outside of those two categories as I feel substantially less confident about those.

Good call on Rhone, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad mystery from there.
