Or thoughts on the Pinot Surprise? Not that I need more wine after BD16!
Not really. Too many subjective descriptors to get close. Stolpman? Pax? Division?
Probably a nice bottle of $20 wine but I didn’t feel the need to buy.
Be pretty hard for me to buy domestic Gamay with the amount of Cru Bojo options from Garagiste under-$25.
I’m not sure that I’ve had a domestic Gamay. I was intrigued by a few of the Berserker Day offers, but I didn’t bite. How does domestic Gamay compare to Beaujolais? Is there a region in the US that does it best?
I’ve had a couple Vincent Gamays and loved them. Vincent has done BD offers in the past that have included Gamay. See my CT TN for the 2019 Bjornson.
I have never been disappointed by a Beaujolais from Garagiste. Not buying much from them nowadays because of my aversion to shipping… But his taste/sensibility in that appellation is spot on.
Sometimes K&L has names that he is also bringing over.
I figure there aren’t many possibilities of wineries that make a sufficient quantity of Gamay, and are well known and well regarded. Edmund St. John is a no go. Brick House also. They never need to close out wine.
Best guesses are Evening Land and Arnot Roberts, both of which Garagiste has featured before.
My guess is Evening Land, which I also suspected for the recent Pinot mystery.
True. Was mainly curious about what wineries made good Gamay and how it’d compare in a side by side against Cru Bojo
Thanks for the pointers. Looking forward to trying a bottle out
It is a carnival game. I took a flyer a few times and got wines that I really enjoyed, but have given up on it. Too many unremarkable wines. I can go visit a very brilliant shop owner, tell him what I enjoy, and be led to many wines that I love. Support a local business, and do it all with no hyperbole.
Rimmerman is very valuable for wines that are not obtainable in my local market, and as a way to save a few dollars on things I know I want when they pop up. It is no joy slogging through all of the exclamation points and rhetorical question marks. But this is the way of the new generation and the Internet.
Good thoughts. I’ve been trying to ween myself off online bargain shopping and at-a-distance wine shopping in general to support more local, but it’s been difficult. I live in LA and some of the more interesting wine shops are a bit of slog (and have also adopted a predictable politics as a core to their identities, one going so far as to insist that wine is itself never apolitical… FFS enough). K&L and Wine House are great and reasonably close, but I find myself doing most of my purchasing online. I’ve got to just do more in-person buying.
As for
Hah! Rimmerman and his method of communicating and ordering are now into “old man” territory! People in their early 20’s probably find it either annoying and old or kind of quaint.
I’d done a quick scan of 2023 domestic Gamay on CT. My top guess ended up being Arnot Roberts. I ordered a bottle out of curiosity and because despite my aversion to Rimmerman’s domestic mystery offers, I really doubt this is a dud.
From domestic Gamay Noirs I had 2018 Andrew Rich Gamay Noir Lazy River Vineyard I obtained through FullPull for about $20 some time ago. I recall it was complex and interesting but lacked the balance of beaujolais. Still it was very much enjoyable for the price.
me too you might as well add 3 bucks to every bottle
At this point, I’m not seeing much Cru Beaujolais below $30 USD and many of the most recognized producers are $35+.
If people know of notable Cru Beaujolais regularly trading under $30, let me know!
I have given up on mystery wines there, as they are often fine, but rarely exciting. However, I find they do have a lot of interesting wines, especially their Italian whites/roses from lesser-known regions/producers. Things like the Barone Sergio Grillo, Villagrande Rosato, Miano Shiara, Saputi Ribona, Cieck Erbaluce Misobolo, and Castellaro Pomice were all wines I got last year, and all are delicious, food-friendly wines. And they probably averaged $20 per bottle or less.
The price climb is definitely real, but reliably very good bottles from the likes of like Roilette (“regular” and tardive), Burgaud, Diochon, Vissoux, Pavillon de Chavannes are all still generally available under $30.
Yeah, my first thought was Roilette. Even the Tardive can be found under $30. Thivin has climbed but can still be found under $30. I am buying less and less Beaujolais not due to increased prices but due to super ripe vintages. Luckily, the less ripe vintages are often less lauded and pricing can be more favorable. At least, I found some good deals on '21s and assume it was because they were less heralded than the much more solar '20 and '22.
Cru Beaujolais from Garagiste recently…
Perrachon Julienas $15.74
Piron Morgon Cote du Oy $23.91
Piron Fleurie $18.71
Colonat Morgon $18.74
Caprioles Regnie $19.73
Hoppenot Fleurie $19.84
I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. I’ve got over a dozen bottles of Roilette in my cellar (nearly all Tardive).
