The Economist: wine and climate change

Apologies for not posting here anymore except to share links to my occasional articles—having a kid has taken away most of the time I had available for hobbies. Nonetheless I hope this new piece is of interest to the community. I’ll be happy to address any questions or criticisms. Everything I know about wine (which might not be much!) I learned from this forum.

Winemakers in the New World have long turned to science to catch up with methods that European producers had perfected via centuries of trial and error. Now the climate is forcing those incumbents to change their time-honoured ways

Can you hook us up with a version of the article sans paywall?

I use https://archive.ph/ to get around paywalls. Doesn’t work with all, but most mags/newspapers.

I can probably send you a copy privately, but don’t think I can post a free version of paywalled content to the public internet, unfortunately. I’m aware that pretty much prevents open discussion on sites like this. :crazy_face:

This is super interesting. Thanks for sharing. It is going to be so interesting to see who is an early adopter of purchasing land with the plan to beginning new wineries in the future areas or if established wineries will plan to purchase land and utilize it in a similar fashion to their current areas. It’s a crazy time in wine.

The very small amount of pink in that map doesn’t make sense to me. You would expect all yellow areas adjacent to red areas to have a pink area in between. Either that or, if the changes are that drastic, a white area in between, but that seems unlikely given realistic estimates of both climate changes and grape crop viability.

Admittedly I have not read the article because it’s behind a paywall, so do tell me if my interpretation of that map is missing something.

I think you can sign up for one month free trial if you’re not a subscriber.

I’m not sure of their policy on sharing for fora such as this. If no one here is familiar I can try contacting them to see if we can get a link.

Of course we are interested in changes in fine wine grape growing problems, but I think this is “first world problem” par excellence. The impact of climate change on basic food crops could be way more significant.
