The Agave Thread: Tequila & Mezcal

There was recently a fortaleza drop in NJ - I missed the initial rush but was happy to get a still strength for $76.

It crossed my mind but I’m personally not really overly brand loyal here.
I was thinking the margins on Tequila must be significant to absorb some?
We can get 8-10 yr old Bourbon for similar price, yet a 1-3 yr old good tequila demands $50+?

Admittedly I have no idea of the underlying costs though.

Corn vs Blue Agave? Corn is an annual crop. Blue agave harvests in 5-8 years. Plus the extraction process is complicated to roast the agave and grind it

Good point!

That certainly equals things up

Like I said it was my initial thought. I’m off to buy some tequila tomorrow.

Agave should be 8 years. 5 and its going to be laden with jarabe and glycerin to be marketable.

Anyone familiar with this one. I was just gifted it and was told to “enjoy or save it and sell it in a couple of years.” Will be enjoying as i am not a flipper. BTW it’s an anejo and direct from Mexico (70 proof).

Never had it but Old Town Tequila has the 80pf version available.

Post a note, please.

I will.

Looks like Agave spirits will be tariff free come 1/20/25.

Heading to SD for work and plan to hit up old town while in town.

@Kris_Patten my wife is digging Lalo which is all the rage amongst the suburban ladies (no additives, yada, yada). I told her that we went thru a few bottles over a year ago upon recommendation from my agave guru (you). Her criticism that I agree with is that the bottle cap/cork is basically childproofed and extremely difficult to open. lol.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Go upstairs and have lunch or dinner. Food and drinks are pretty good. You can also customize a tasting if you want (ask for just a small shot, not their full pour, which is a large amount of alcohol).

For anyone interested the Kirkland Costco has Tears of Llorona for $300 and change.
