The Agave Thread: Tequila & Mezcal

Translation?

up thread

I also prefer the Fortaleza Still Strength over the Blanco, which I also like. I have a bottle of the Still Strength at the moment. I find the Fortaleza tequilas at retail from time to time, mostly at prices pretty close to original retail.

I’ll keep an eye out for it. I’m not sure if it’s available in OH? The bottle doesn’t look famiiar to me, but that doesn’t mean anything.

RDLF Extra Añejo was one of my favorites years ago. I had forgotten about it and moved on to 1942 more recently.

Still delicious and not as sweet as 1942. Makes the best Espresso Martinis too. The new RDLF Cristalino, finished in PX sherry casks may fit your palate too.

It looks like only one store in OH has it.
I looked at Tequila Matchmaker and many reviews mention lots of vanilla, which I’m not a big fan of. I’ll have to look for it at restaurants/bars and have a taste before committing to a bottle.

I don’t like vanilla in Repo either.

Anyone tried 2024 G4 Madera? Killed a Blanco and looking at what to open next.

Do you mean the Blanco Madera or the Repo Madera that recently came out?! I do have a couple of bottles of the batch #3 Blanco Madera which came out earlier in the year. It’s outstanding, the best batch yet imo and probably in top 5 of my all time favorite tequilas. I have not tried the repo yet, not sure what the MSRP is but passed on the $250+ asking price locally.

Blanco Madera. That Repo Madera price is absurd.

You guys are the great enablers. Tracked down some Fortaleza Bianco and Repo and agree very good.
I still find the Arette Blanco and Repo similar quality level for about half the $$ around here.

Did a little Blanco tasting.

Fortaleza Lote 136-B
G4 Madera 2024
Cascahuin Tahona
RDLF Platino

In order of preference:

Fortaleza by a good margin, so much sweet cooked agave and texturally alluring. Followed by G4 Madera that has the textural component from the oak but a bit less agave and misses the distinct spiciness or overwhelming agave. RDLF has a great peppery nose with cooked agave but misses the richness/depth of Fortaleza or G4 Madera from the oak. Surprisingly, the Cascahuin Tahona was easily my least favorite as it was lean, lacked the viscosity of others and the agave notes.

Probably not a fair fight as 136 is probably my favorite Fortaleza in a long time and G4 Madera is a unique expression.

Hadn’t noticed until now, but the one I have from a few years ago is the 82-B. The Repo is the 124-B.

Do you find big variations lote to lote?

Big, no. But some can be really good for your palate with heavy pepper or agave notes.

Anyone concerned about 25% tariffs on Mexico for their Tequila and Mezcal inventories?

Just glad it’s not France, lol.
