In Barcelona right now experiencing Catalan tapas and Basque tapas…and the US versions of “tapas” are sh*t.
That is all
daaaamn, dude. How do I get your job??? You’re everywhere .
Going to El Bulli?
Make sure you visit the markets and try a wide variety of hams that you can’t get in the states outside of the super expensive Jamón ibérico.
Well you’re from the Bay area…tapas must be $h*t there, come down to LA and visit the Bazaar if you need a tapas fix… yeah, and we have much better dim sum that you northerners, better, much better Korean restaurants too

Tell us something we didn’t already know!
I’ll definitely give you the Korean edge. The average (nb average) Japanese joint (sushi, izakaya, donburi) is better in LA too. Taiwanese Chinese is better in the LA “environs”. Cantonese I would say is on par though. The highs are quite high in SF Bay Area. I think SoCal has a few better ramenyas, but NorCal definitely holds it own for ramen.
No for El Bulli. People I’m traveling with won’t really appreciate it.
We just got back from BCN yesterday. We flew home on AA upfront, stayed at Le Meridien using my Starwood points. Oh wait a minute. Wrong board.
My report here… Barcelona and Madrid restaurants recs - Travel, Wine Tourism, and Restaurants Forum - WineBerserkers
This wasn’t a work trip and I needed to go to BSL for a few days to see my sister so I went sfo jfk lhr on AA in biz class (evip upgrade) then lhr bsl on ba then bsl bcn on easyjet (bleh) bcn cdg tomorrow. Then on thursday cdg jfk sfo also in biz on aa.
J’aime beaucoup Paris. Yum
Mercado Boqueria is one of the greatest places on earth, please tell me you went there. As is Barcelona. I’ve heard an El Bulli res is like a 6 month lead time…

Ask me how many times.
I thought El Bulli is closed?

Slight disagreement here on you’re generalized assessment of US versions of tapas. I won’t press that they’re up to Barcelona standards, but New York City has had quite a renaissance, imo, of good and commendable tapas joints. The likes of Tia Pol, Txikito, Caliu, Boqueria, Las Ramblas and Casa Mono, in addition to a bunch of others that I mya have missed out on.
Besides, I have to add in the, imo and as good as Barcelona tapas already are, they’re second to those in the truly Basque places like San Sebastian and Bilbao.
Definitely NYC has a leg up on SF for Spanish/Catalan/Basque tapas. No arguments from me.
I’m in Paris now. More eating and drinking to follow! =)
