I actually like Torbreck RunRig (on th right occasion). but in my experience it does not make old bones. Steading and Woodcutters I assume are just typical Aussie ooze monsters.
I was expecting very little and still my expectations were not met.
Never loved the Amorio and never had one with this much age, but I have had some good bottles of younger Patriota in the past – like the notes that Bonarda brings to the Malbec. Had a 2012 Torbreck RunRig in 2022. It was not nearly ready. I would think that a 1999 RunRig would be in a good spot based on that.
There’s also several bottles of 2007 Amorio in the crypt.
Bittersweet Crypt note - this half bottle of 2001 Le Vieux Donjon was a stocking stuffer for my dad when it was released. It was still there in the cellar. It’s beautiful now, but heartbreaking.
David, I find this thread very moving and all bittersweet. What a tremendous *memento mori * - reminder of our mortality. Thanks for continuing your journey and posting. This Christmas found me wondering how many more I’ll be fortunate enough to share with my parents. I’m sure you miss him.
Bringing more crypt items home soon.
Rough estimate is that there are still 700 or so bottles left.
You are making me think of my dad. The older he gets, the more CNDP we drink together; with age he prefers bigger and bigger wines, and these seem to elicit the best comments.
Brought home a small batch of wines from the crypt. With all the Christmas folderol there was only room for 24 bottles. This 25 year old Chilean wine was one of them. I was expecting the worst with a topping of pyrazines, but it is actually quite good. It’s a touch rich for my taste, but not at all over the top. There’s another bottle in the crypt, and I will definitely ferry it home next time.
Now can someone please explain why my Napa-centric dad even bought this?
Maybe received as a gift?
Multiple bottles? Probably not.
Got great scores back in the day……
Your dad had secrets you didn’t know about?
Rothschild?
With Concha y Toro
Definitely the Rothschild name.
Yes. In a collaboration
Not dead but starting to lose freshness. A far cry from the Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay of years ago, but a decent bottle to pour for the NYE snacks. There are three more in the crypt that need to be gotten to sooner rather than later.
Those used to be generously oaked
Not so much anymore. Some but not overbearing. Sad, as the person the bottle was “aimed” at loves oaky Chards! ![]()
