That’s right!
Well it’s a nice thought, but for the most part we had diametrically opposed palates! ![]()
WSJ reminds of this thread.
That was a nice column of Lettie’s. I’d liked to have known what her deceased friend did for a living. He was only described as “a wine collector” – a term that always vaguely annoys me. In fact, he sounds like a genuine wine lover, not obsessed with collecting.
Another one of those “dad bought a bunch and never drank them” wines. It’s bright, focused, but I don’t see it getting better. Was probably better 10 years ago. Definitely worth drinking though.
98 Right bank - best of the best for vintages?! Makes one ask (you may ask yourself) if this is a grand cru from a great vintage why is it better to drink it at 15 to 20 years old?
Cause it’s not that grand of a grand cru.
Fair enough - I have 2 Pavie Maquin and an Ausone from '98. May be time to drink them up!
NOT THE AUSONE!!!
NOT THE AUSONE!!!
Death Bed Wine?
I don’t know how old you are.
Probably best ~2040.
We cracked a '71 at the Good Old Stuff in Brunswick Maine a year ago. Probably at peak, although it obviously could have hung in there for at least a few more years.
Old enough to drink it but also took my mother out for a drink tonight and she is 105! So, not withstanding the fact that fellow board member Michael Chang thinks I am going to die from Hypertension from drinking too much I will hold on to it and drink it in 2040 for my 80th Birthday! And I will think of you Dan Kravitz - 'cause you are the man!
Wow - 105? She looks great! My mom made 97, looked more like 75. But she didn’t drink for the last 40-50 years of her life, other than a sip or 1920 Madeira (my father’s birth year).
Nice wine but as you say not intended for 25+ years cellaring
I hope you and your mother both enjoy it in 2040!
A relative youngster!

My grandmother lived to 102. She had an Old Fashioned every night until she was 99, and it all went downhill when she stopped.
Awfully nice of dad to leave some of these in the crypt!
More than enough oak for the wine plus a casket, but hey, it’s a crypt!
Are those Oaky messes? I bought a few bottles of 2017 and tried one early and it was dominated by oak - but I assumed that it just needed more time since it seems to be a well regarded wine.
