The Dunn I had recently and someone else stated that it was typical Dunn, not a magnum though sorry Steve. The Pavie I had last Summer and I did not get the impression that it was tired. But hey this is NYC, and I have all week to look for something else if need be. No worries.
L’eglise clinet or Pontet Canet for sure. the pontet canet is probably the more stylish of the two. both a little on the light side but class acts. give the calon segur a pass. best thing about the 96 is the label.
i could have been wrong about what’s up with the Dunn. i looked back at my notes – last had it on 12-13 March 2004. “first bottle corked. second bottle: double decanted. dark garnet red. gnarly. tons of cheery and alcohol on the nose. dry tanins, red currents, minerals. definitely better the next day.”
i don’t remember this as being a typical dunn in that it was gnarlier than usual. more rugby league than rugby union.
as for the pavie my note isn’t as detailed, “april 2007: clumsy. hot in the wrong sense. stick to the promising jailbait 2004”.
… we used to be a lot more religious about it than we are now. “nancy and diane: the commuting years” made for better wine notes in little black smithson books. we’re lapsing.
BTW, I’m also bringing a mag of 96 Fisher Lamb but I was going to bring that to a Friday night thing…If you guys would rather that, I can substitute it of the 86 Stag’s Leap SLV.
for me, yes. with all apologies to kenny, the 96 fischer lamb is nice but in a more straight forward, not hiding anything kind of way. pretty fruit up front, nice balance on the finish. the 86 slv, granted i have not had for a few years or out of mag, but it was a complex, seductive wine then and i can only imagine it now. versace vs vintage channel. i’m more the vintage channel type.
