Syrah. Not USA, Not Aussie, Not France.

Where?

I am planning a tasting around Syrahs that hail from anywhere but those three locales.
Thoughts? Notes? Insight? Direction?

Thanks!

Switzerland.

Cortona (Italy) - Il Bosco D’Allessandro.

Also Tuscany, Il Scrio. Isole e Olena has one from the Marche.

Greece. Geravassilou makes one. There is a really, really good from Avantis (Ayio Chronos), but suspect not available in US.

New Zealand.

South Africa comes to mind, so does Argentina.

+1 on Argentina. You may want to track down some Northern Chile samples as well.

Some interesting ones from Sicily as well

I recently set up a tasting of various Syrahs from around the world. Look for Luca, while a big style, it offered a great syrah from Argentina. Another example would be Chile, Errazuriz makes a single vineyard around $15, I think. Theu also have a higher end syrah. The single vineyard is fine, but offered a lot of green notes. Italian syrah is great, but a bit harder to find as a solo. There are quite a few around Tuscany and possibly Sicily.

Finca Sandoval from Spain
Portugal - my wife loves Portugese syrah. Very nice fine ground white pepper notes. I thought there was a nice one from Capcanes but it does not show up in CT so I am probably mistaken.
Israel - some interesting stuff. I had a nice Ella Valley Syrah. I think I got it from Posner.

South Africa.

Yup…the two I’ve tried have been amazingly good…very Rhonish in character. But lottsa luck finding
them in the USofA.
I’ve had some pretty amazing ones from NewZealand. And a couple from the AltoAdige in Italy.

I think Finca Sandoval is now a GSM blend, but the old ones were mostly if not all Syrah IIRC.

Italy has a few worth trying. South Africa.

Switzerland is supposed ot have some good ones, but I could never find any.

One that no one has suggested yet - Chile.

If you think not, try a bottle of the Montes ‘Folly’ some time!

Great info here. The group might actually do some work other than the opening… puling out bottle… and closing of the Eurocave door…

Thanks!

Graillot, the Rhone producer, makes a syrah from Morocco called “Syrocco.”

A second on the Molly Folly from Chile. A fantastic wine.

Oopsies. Sorry, Jorge, I skimmed that and missed the second part.

I am doing my annual terrine event at the end of the month and am thinking about matching two Syrahs with my mushroom rich terrine - maybe a Northern Rhone and now that we have been talking about it, perhaps a 2000 Montes Folly. It was pretty big and hearty when young but should have smoothed out some by now. If I match it with a mature Cornas, for example, things might work out well.

I’d recommend Craggy Range Le Sol from New Zealand.
