Tokkuri Tei 449 Kapahulu ave. the best sushi I have ever had. Sit at the Sushi bar and start talking to the chef. He will amaze you and pull out some real treats for you. I go every year to play lacrosse. I never miss a visit. One of my favorite places in the world.
This is not touristy and is on the second floor of a strip center. A friend, who is a local, pointed me to it years ago.
Agree with Sasabune but realize that it is omakase and not inexpensive. Make reservation and sit at the bar area and not a table so you can see what’s being prepared. They also have a very nice sake list. I have not tried Morimoto’s restaurant in Waikiki but that might be another possibility. In the downtown area try Hiroshi as they have a tapas menu with many sushi and raw fish choices … http://www.hiroshihawaii.com/menu.html …Aloha, Gary
Wish I had seen this earlier! But, perhaps will be relevant for others coming out in the future. Mitch’s is quite popular, as he’s developed a reputation for being a bit of a “sushi nazi,” which is trendy these days, it seems. It’s a very small place, so be prepared. My main issue with Mitch’s is that they over wash their fish. Been there twice, and will likely not go back. Upside is BYO. Sasabune is similar in many respects.
Maguroya (on Waialae Ave.) in Kaimuki, is considerably better, in my estimation. No BYO. Great fish, not too washed. Rice can be impeccable, unlike Mitch’s.
Hi Steve, I forgot about that place. It used to be fantastic. Then, they moved and there were some staff changes. It’s not as good as it once was. However, a friend, who also likes Japanese food, had the omakase recently and said it was “quite good.” Damning by faint praise?? But, I think I will check it out for myself soon and see how they are doing. Thanks for the reminder.
