Sunday night wines: Big Basin, Karl Lawrence & Arcadian

  • 2008 Big Basin Vineyards Syrah Aura Rose of Syrah - USA, California (6/7/2009)
Popped and poured, enjoyed over three hours. Strawberries and watermelon on the nose and palate. Zingy, fruity, crisp and refreshing. Dry and delicious. Very refreshing rose, perfect early summer drink.
  • 2005 Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (6/7/2009)
Popped and poured, enjoyed over three hours. Wonderful representation of what Napa Valley Cabernet can achieve when not manipulated. Expressive nose, smooth rich mouthfeel, well balanced and delicious. An ageworthy wine that has a lot of great years ahead.
  • 2004 Arcadian Syrah Westerly Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley (6/7/2009)
Decanted one hour, enjoyed over three. Stinky nose upon opening, smells and tastes like a dead ringer for Hermitage. Earthy, smoky, olives and black fruits in the mouth. Evolved over the course of the evening, picking up weight but retaining those classic Northern Rhone qualities. An excellent drink and one that would be hard to pick blind as a Santa Ynez syrah. Beautifully done.
